In this post, instead of talking, as we have done until now, about each of the different plants for sustainable gardening available at Sala Graupera, we will give you a series of tips so you can make your own sustainable garden.

To create a sustainable garden it is advisable to know the climatic and soil conditions of the area. Variations in environmental humidity, wind regime, range of winter temperatures, soil characteristics (pH, particle size, etc.), can vary the water input required by a plant.

Below we list other points to keep in mind:

Have good advice on the morphology and requirements of each species.

Prepare the ground to achieve good drainage (whether through materials, topography, etc.) and avoid substrates very rich in nutrients. Waterlogging is very harmful to Mediterranean climate species, especially if it occurs in summer, as it favors the appearance of fungal diseases and root drowning. As for nutrients, these species are accustomed to growing in relatively poor soils and, generally, their excess produces disproportionate growth, which destructures the plant structure.

Prioritize variety of species as opposed to monospecific compositions, so that the characteristics of different Mediterranean plants at any time of year bring quality to the garden, that is, take advantage of the chromatic variety and textures of Mediterranean plants, to achieve very interesting gardens during the four seasons of the year. Over time, a balance and natural selection is established between them, affecting the overall appearance to a minimum.

Group plants that have the same needs, especially water needs, and avoid plantings in contact with areas with a high irrigation frequency.

Plant during the appropriate time of year, generally avoiding doing so during summer. When this season arrives, plants must have established their roots, to better withstand drought.

Cover the spaces between plants with some type of material to avoid excessive loss of soil moisture and at the same time prevent the appearance of weeds.

Water only when necessary but abundantly, thus favoring the deep growth of roots. Separate waterings over time, to avoid the appearance of fungal diseases.

Perform annual or biannual pruning, at the appropriate time, once flowering is finished, to avoid plant aging and favor regrowth.

We hope this guide of guidelines is useful to you, if you follow the above advice you can enjoy a sustainable garden, created by you and adapted to your environment.
