The Botanical Garden of Barcelona is located on Montjuïc mountain, between the Castle and the Olympic Stadium, on terrain with steep slopes. It has a shape reminiscent of a large amphitheater facing northwest and covers an area of 14 hectares.

Through a large representation of Mediterranean climate plant species, the Garden aims to show the similarities between Californian, Chilean, South African and Australian landscapes, with those of the Mediterranean basin.

Currently there are about 1,300 species represented, which are grouped according to their origin, artificially recreating their natural ecosystems.

The Garden was designed taking into account two fundamental considerations: the first in relation to the structuring of the vegetation and the second consideration was to take advantage of the natural relief to create a network of paths and avoid as much as possible significant earthworks. As a result of these two premises, a triangular mesh emerged that sits on the terrain and adapts to the different topographies, giving rise to 71 phytoepisodes that show the main plant communities observed in the various regions of the world with a Mediterranean climate.

The maintenance management of the Botanical Garden is carried out by the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona and among its objectives is the research of plants characterized by their adaptation to sustainable Mediterranean gardening.

For each of these Mediterranean climate landscapes represented in the Botanical Garden, numerous species can be found in the Nursery catalog, so in upcoming posts we will present in detail some of the species from each region.

If you visit the Garden during this month, note some plants that begin their flowering at this time and will be spectacular, such as _[Ceanothus griseus](http://www.salagraupera.com/es/component/zoo/?controller=zoofilter&task=dosearch&search_id=4912&app_id=7&Itemid=762)_, _[Callistemon pityoides](http://www.salagraupera.com/es/cataleg/general/item/callistemon-pityoides-2)_, _[Euphorbia rigida](http://www.salagraupera.com/es/cataleg/general/item/euphorbia-rigida-2)_, _[Bulbine fructescens](http://www.salagraupera.com/es/cataleg/general/item/bulbine-frutescens-3)_ or _[Leptospermum scoparium](http://www.salagraupera.com/es/component/zoo/?controller=zoofilter&task=dosearch&search_id=4911&app_id=7&Itemid=762)_.
