garden festivals begin

This week some of the reference gardening festivals such as the Chelsea Flower Show have begun, which in this edition celebrates its centenary.

In the prestigious London competition, the "Trailfinders Australian Garden" garden designed by Phil Johnson received the Best Show Garden, the highest award of the competition.

However, it is worth noting the garden titled "After the Fire" by designer James Basson, in which Mediterranean vegetation is the protagonist and which received a special mention.

This garden was awarded the Best Fresh Garden, which is the highest recognition within this category that bets on gardens of smaller dimensions than those competing in the Show Garden, but not of lower quality.

The idea of this space is about the destructive power of fires in southern Europe and the regenerative capacity that nature has after this type of disturbance.

In this garden we can find native species of the Mediterranean region such as strawberry trees, myrtles, phillyreas or rockroses. Of the latter, in the Sala Graupera catalog, we can find a variety of hybrids with high ornamental value such as Cistus x florentinus or Cistus x purpureus, among others.

The garden combines the lustrous green of vegetation with the dark soil of carbonaceous mulch and some burnt trunks, with a striking orange terracotta pavement. In this way, an interesting space of contrasts is created, as recognized by the experienced jury of the event.
